چکیده

At GSI we are presently developing an alternative method for a very fast (in order of few ms) range adaptation for radiotherapy of moving organs [1] with scanned ion beams to the existing 3D online motion compensation (3DOMC) [2] system. The range adaptation can be achieved by deflecting the ion beam (with the energy E0, see Fig.1) to different positions on a static wedge-shaped energy degrader (corresponding energies E1 and E2) in the beam line. Before the beam is delivered to a required point of the moving organ (target) it is first collimated by slits and than deflected by scanning magnets [3]. The entire energy degrader system will consist of one or several degraders mounted on a frame and a step motor which is placing the frame into the beam line.

Fast adaptation of ion beam range for beam tracking: beam characterization∗

An ion-optical based fast adaptation of ion beam range for the treatment of moving targets with beam tracking was investigated. The method employs a deflection of the ion beam on a small single wedge-degrader positioned between two bending magnets for range adaptation [1, 2]. A prototype system was implemented at the therapy beam line at GSI and beam parameters of energy-adapted beams were char...

Impact of Various Beam Parameters on Lateral Scattering in Proton and Carbon-ion Therapy

Background: In radiation therapy with ion beams, lateral distributions of absorbed dose in the tissue are important. Heavy ion therapy, such as carbon-ion therapy, is a novel technique of high-precision external radiotherapy which has advantages over proton therapy in terms of dose locality and biological effectiveness. Methods: In this study, we used Monte Carlo method-based Geant4 toolkit to s...

Initial simulation study of a new method of range adaptation for radiotherapy of moving targets with scanned ion-beams

In the radiotherapy (RT) of moving targets with scanned ion-beams at GSI we are investigating a new method of fast range adaptation. The method controls an ion-beam depth in a moving target by deflecting the ion-beam on an appropriate thickness of a static wedge shaped energy degrader placed upstream in the ion-optical system. A feasibility study of this method using Monte Carlo simulations are...

Research needed for improving heavy-ion therapy

The large interest in heavy-ion therapy is stimulated from its excellent clinical results. The bases of this success are the radiobiological and physical advantages of heavy-ion beams and the active beam delivery used for an intensity-modulated particle radiotherapy (IMPT). Although heavy-ion therapy has reached a high degree of perfection for clinical use there is still large progress possible...

Heavy-ion tumor therapy: Physical and radiobiological benefits

High-energy beams of charged nuclear particles !protons and heavier ions" offer significant advantages for the treatment of deep-seated local tumors in comparison to conventional megavolt photon therapy. Their physical depth-dose distribution in tissue is characterized by a small entrance dose and a distinct maximum !Bragg peak" near the end of range with a sharp fall-off at the distal edge. Ta...
